About

Ivan James Lindsay

Ivan James Lindsay is a British art collector, writer and lecturer.

After Eton College and The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) Lindsay spent four years in the British Army as an Infantry Officer in the Scots Guards  in Southeast Asia. He was an instructor at the British Army Jungle Warfare Training School (JWTS) in Brunei.

Lindsay’s interest in the arts continued a family tradition. He is part of the Scottish Clan Lindsay. The success of the Lindsay’s coal mining business allowed for the collecting of art and Ivan Lindsay’s great grandfather, Alexander Lindsay, 25th Earl of Crawford  started building their art collection.

For several decades Lindsay has been one of the leading art experts in Old Masters and Impressionists and Russian Art, establishing world record prices for many artists including Canaletto and Goya.

Lindsay is an art publisher and the author of 7 books. ‘A History of Loot and Stolen Art’, a history of looting from antiquity until the present day, was followed by ‘Masterpieces of Soviet Painting and Sculpture‘. His most recent book, ‘Soviet Women and their Art,’ was launched at Waterstones, Piccadilly in 2019 and is now required reading for various courses at English Universities. He has published catalogues for museums, such as the Wallace Collection, and lectured at universities and institutions in Cambridge, Washington, York and London. He has written over 100 articles on art for The Guardian, Country and Town House and Spears WMS magazine where he was a Contributing Editor.
